About this item: Master ceramist Angel Cerón replicates the unique artistry of the Maya culture with this detailed mask. Similar to a totemic image, the mask features the profile of Chaac, God of Rain, while the iguana represents Itzamná, God of the Sky, Lord of Fire, and Love. Itzmana's name has many meanings, one of which is "house of the four iguanas," in reference to the four directions of the wind: north, south, east, and west. To the Maya people, Itzmaná reigned over life and death. To finish this piece, Cerón includes a brave warrior with an ornate headdress. About our Artist: Angel Ceron comes from a family with generations of artisan experience. He learned the family ceramic techniques from his father, Antonio Ceron Orta, a renowned artisan. Angel began a long study of Mexico's pre-Hispanic cultures and learned the Nahuatl language spoken in ancient Mesoamerica. He uses clay from northern Oaxaca state, the only clay of this kind in Mexico and perhaps in the world. The unique characteristics of this yellow clay make it ideal for his work.
