George Ohr, the self-proclaimed "Mad Potter of Biloxi," was a ceramic artist who lived and worked in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Ohr's work is characterized by its eccentricity and irregularity. Ohr was born in Biloxi, Mississippi in 1857. He began his career as a potter in the 1880s, working in the traditional Southern style of salt-glazed stoneware. However, Ohr was not content to stick to convention, and he began to experiment with clay and glaze techniques. This led to the development of his signature style, which was often called "modernist" or "abstract." Ohr's work was not well-received by his contemporaries. In fact, he was often ridiculed for his unconventional approach to pottery. However, Ohr continued to produce his unique ceramics, and today his work is highly sought after by collectors.
